Design System Adoption

Auditing old components and pressure-testing new design system components in Fusion Manufacturing

I championed efforts within the manufacturing design team to help the platform team roll out three new design system components.

First, I oversaw the auditing of current components. I managed a design file where manufacturing design team members including myself could label components from A to D, depending on how much work was needed to update them. These results were later put into a spreadsheet and delivered to the platform team for next steps.

This method was then shared out with and adopted by teams across Fusion such as the electronics workspace and design workspace.

At the same time, a request from the platform team was to look into how the new components would integrate into the current manufacturing experience. I started this by identifying typical workflows for manufacturing users.

After creating a prototype from these workflows, I collaborated with a user researcher to create a testing protocol with internal stakeholders who have not yet seen the new design system components. The method of the test was to show videos of the tasks within a common manufacturing workflow twice; once with the current Fusion experience and once as a prototype with the new components.

After each task, a standard list of questions were asked to uncover insights such as whether or not participants saw a noticeable difference in the old vs. new experience, and whether or not there was a “patchwork” effect with integrating the new components in the current experience.

Icon Consistency

Auditing over 120 manufacturing drop-downs and overseeing the work in creating over 300 icons

During my first year at Autodesk, I led a horizontal effort to bring iconography to dropdowns in Fusion command panels.

There were over 120 menus across the various working areas within manufacturing; milling, turning, additive, inspection, fabrication and simulation.

Creating extensive iconography for manufacturing options would help us to
